Tea is well known for its relaxing nature as well as its natural energy boost. In a recent study conducted by researchers in China, findings revealed that drinking a daily cup of tea could reduce the risk for cognitive decline in older adults. The study found even those with a family history of dementia to display a decrease in probability.

The National University of Singapore’s, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, researched and collected all data. The study examined the link between consuming a daily cup of tea and its correlation to reducing the risk for developing Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Data was collected from over 950 seniors over a span of seven years. Participants were at least 55 years old and were all cognitively intact when the study began. Participants were reassessed every two years as well as physically examined and screened for lifestyle habits, conditions, and activities. This information was used to create and accurate statistic model for their research data. Participants were not required to change any other daily activities or diets.

Daily Consumption

Findings revealed that participants who consumed a daily cup of tea , were 50% less likely to show signs of cognitive decline in comparison to those who did not drink a cup of tea a day. The types of teas that were consumed did not seem to effect the results. Teas ranged from brewed from whole leaves, black, green ,or oolong teas. According to Assistant Professor Feng, it is the bioactive compounds found in tea leaves that contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help protect the brain from damage.

Another benefits to drinking a cup of tea a day is that it is also cost effective and convenient therefore does not require a huge lifestyle change. The cost of a neuro-cognitive disorders can be quite high and opting for tea can be very low risk. So grab yourself some tea and start drinking a cup a day!
