As we age we will start to notice many physical changes within ourselves, one common issue for those over 60 is the issue of increased hair loss or balding. The progression or rate of the hair loss can be impacted by genetics, disease, or other external factors. The most common type of hair loss associated with aging in both men and women is known as Androgenic alopecia and refers to both the thinning and balding of hair. This type of hair loss is most commonly associated with genetics meaning it is often hereditary and follows the patterns of the parental hair loss. Natural hair growth rate tends to decline in men approaching age 60 and less drastically in women following menopause. The hair follicles will allow for less and slower growth as we continue to age. It is important to note that while hair loss is a natural part of aging, there are also certain conditions and medications which could be contributing to your overall hair loss. Similarly so, there exists certain treatments, preventative measures, and procedures that could solve your hair loss issues.

Some health conditions and medications associated with aging can be found below:

  • Iron Deficiency
  • Diabetes
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Poor diet

Medications contributing to hair loss:

  • Antidepressants
  • Gout medication
  • Blood thinners
  • Chemotherapy medications

Although aging and hair loss is inevitable, it is possible to slow down the process with proper haircare and procedures. Certain companies offer mineral rich haircare products which will help deliver the proper vitamins and minerals to combat against hair loss. Other natural remedies such as applying an olive oil mask to the scalp has also been known to help against hair thinning, while providing nutrients to the hair follicles. Some surgical procedures include hair transplants, which involves a doctor implanting a graft with hair follicles onto the affected area of the scalp. More commonly used amongst men is Rogaine, which has been known to promote new hair growth. Other lifestyle changes such as decreased and or quitting smoking could also help promote hair growth.
